Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? You can also ask directly in the app.

RestOrTrain is an AI app that knows everything about your cycling, from individual rides to your entire fitness history. It can explain your training, evaluate your fitness and fatigue, and help you make smarter decisions day-to-day.
RestOrTrain analyzes your cycling data (power, heart rate, training load, recent fatigue) and uses AI to give you personalized guidance. You can ask it any cycling-related question - and it replies based on your actual numbers, not generic advice. It lets you analyze your past rides, plan future workouts, and gain deep insights into your personal cycling performance.
Download the app, connect your training platforms or devices, complete a short onboarding, and the app will automatically analyze your recent activities. Then you can start asking questions immediately.

ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI - great for many things, but not built for cycling coaching. RestOrTrain is purpose-built to understand your training data and give you actionable guidance. Here's how they compare:

Data Context: RestOrTrain auto-syncs with Strava and Garmin and pre-processes your raw data into coaching insights. With ChatGPT, you'd have to paste raw data manually and hope the AI finds the signal.

AI Model: RestOrTrain uses top AI models benchmarked specifically on sport-specific coaching tasks. ChatGPT is a generalist built for broad tasks like writing and coding, with no domain grounding in cycling.

Route & Race Prep: RestOrTrain natively analyzes GPX route files and builds pacing plans matched to your fitness. ChatGPT can only vaguely discuss a location if you describe it.

Memory: RestOrTrain analyzes years of your history - fitness trends, personal records, and how you respond to different training loads. ChatGPT has no access to your PRs, fitness trends, or long-term training data.

Workout Sync: RestOrTrain exports structured workouts directly to Zwift, Garmin, or your calendar. ChatGPT gives you a text description you'd have to build manually elsewhere.

Calendar Sync: RestOrTrain keeps your planned workouts synced to Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or any app via .ics. With ChatGPT, you manage your schedule manually.

Training is a human challenge, not just a numbers game. Platforms like TrainerRoad use machine learning to build the "perfect" plan, and they are great at the math. But cyclists don't plateau because they did the wrong interval or they FTP estimate is 5W off; they plateau because life gets in the way. Bad sleep, work stress, or an unexpected group ride - life rarely fits into a rigid spreadsheet, so almost no one follows the plan perfectly.

RestOrTrain uses LLMs to solve this. If these models can handle complex physics, they can easily manage training metrics, but they add something classical AI lacks: conversation. Instead of passively accepting "adaptations" on a dashboard, you can tell the AI about your day. It knows your history and instantly rethinks your training to fit your reality. You stop being a slave to a fixed plan and start working with a coach that actually thinks for you.

You get personalized, data-driven guidance, better structure in your training, smarter recovery decisions, and a deeper understanding of your performance metrics. You can ask it anything cycling-related, and the AI will respond with context-aware insights tailored to your numbers and goals. Plus, you can use it for planning your next rides so you always know what's coming next.
Absolutely. The app explains your numbers in simple language and helps you understand training zones, FTP, fatigue, and intensity. Whether you're new to cycling or already training with a coach, the app adjusts answers to your fitness level and experience.
Absolutely. No matter what your goals and preferences are, RestOrTrain sees your data and adapts accordingly. Multiple athletes with an FTP above 5w/kg are already using the platform.
A power meter is not required, but it's highly recommended. RestOrTrain is optimized for cyclists who train with power. However, you can still use the app without one, but power-based data unlocks the full experience. If you don't have a power meter, RestOrTrain will use HR and RPE instead.
Please ask this question directly in RestOrTrain. The AI is equipped with the tools to investigate data sync issues and will help you accordingly.
You can ask about anything related to cycling: performance, planning, recovery, pacing, nutrition, gear, thresholds, VO₂max work, fatigue… whatever is on your mind. The AI responds with context-aware insights tailored to your numbers and your goals. For example: • Rate my last workout • How should I train this week based on my training load? • Find my strengths and weaknesses • I'm preparing for Mallorca 312. Generate a race plan with pacing strategy on each climb
Absolutely. RestOrTrain adapts to your style - whether you follow a full plan, tweak a few workouts, or just ride when you feel like it. You don't have to plan anything in advance, and that's the beauty of it. When you want RestOrTrain to schedule an ideal workout, just ask - that's it.
Yes - you can move workouts, change session types, or request alternatives directly from the chat. The AI will help ensure the plan is solid and follows your requirements.
It depends on what you want. You can use RestOrTrain to fully guide your training, almost like having a coach in your pocket, or just as a helper to support your existing coach or plan. It analyzes your rides, adapts workouts, and answers your cycling questions, giving you guidance, insights, and flexibility while you decide how much coaching you need.
Your data is updated automatically after every ride if your platform (like Garmin) is connected. If you don't have a connected platform or you're using a smart trainer, you'll need to upload your ride files manually. The AI then recalculates your readiness and training plan in real time. We're also working on more integrations to make syncing even easier.

A few questions a month are free. The full, unlimited version requires a subscription - pricing is shown directly in the app and may vary by region.

We hope to drive costs of the subscription down as soon as high quality AI starts getting cheaper.

We offer flexible monthly and yearly subscription plans to fit your training and budget. You can try the app for free before committing, and switching between plans is easy if your needs change.
Yes. Your subscription is fully flexible. You can cancel or pause at any time directly from the app.
Currently, RestOrTrain connects directly with Garmin and Strava. If you use other platforms, you can still upload your ride files manually. We're actively working on integrations with more platforms to make it even easier to sync all your cycling data in the future.
RestOrTrain is currently only available on the App Store. We're actively working on an Android version and will let you know as soon as it's ready!
Yes! Any ride is analyzed automatically - ideally with power data, but heart rate alone works too. If you're using a smart trainer, you'll need to upload your rides manually due to Garmin platform restrictions.
Yes! We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your data, including data encryption in transit and at rest, secure hosting infrastructure, and access controls. We rely on established cloud providers and industry-standard security practices to safeguard your information. Your personal data and activity information is private to you and is not shared with other users or made available through any social features, leaderboards, or community mechanisms. You remain in full control of your data, and all uploads and connections are handled with privacy and security in mind.
